Since launching the Re: Producer podcast series in October 2022, my friend and colleague Mark Jeeves and I have continued to interview some brilliant radio producers to find out more about their career paths. The role of a Radio Producer is such a varied one, and this series celebrates the range of skills required to make creative radio shows and get the best out of presenting talent.
Our brand-new episodes, out today, are with special guests:
Grace Hopper – The former BBC Radio 1 Producer tells us about getting her foot in the door at the BBC after a LOT of saying yes to any and every radio job available. She explains why she decided to move to the commercial sector and become a Producer at Kiss, and she shares her excitement about starting her new role as Executive Producer at TBI Media, where she’ll be overseeing a range of BBC and commercial projects. This is a great podcast for anyone who’s looking to work in youth radio, and a really positive reminder for jaded producers (like me and Mark!) about what a fun world this is to work in.
Lissie Day – Lissie is a valued member of the Scala Radio team, and Mark and I were delighted she took the time to speak to her colleagues about her job! She joined as Producer in 2020 and since then has worked on a huge amount of shows and series hosted by the likes of Penny Smith, Alexis Ffrench, YolanDa Brown, Angellica Bell, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Mr Motivator, Tony Hadley, Eddi Reader and many more! Lissie regularly pitches brilliant series ideas, and she was nominated at the 2023 ARIA Awards for Best Music Special for ‘Access All Areas’ hosted by Dame Evelyn Glennie. In this episode, she tells us about making ‘Access All Areas’ along with her journey from student radio to Scala.
There are now over 20 Re: Producer episodes, covering many different radio networks and programmes. If you’re interested in sports radio, listen to the episode with Kathryn Anastasi, Deputy Managing Editor of talkSPORT, and if you want to learn more about live news radio, check out our conversation with Husain Husaini, the Mornings Editor at Times Radio. We’ve also spoken to the people behind legendary shows like Woman’s Hour and Desert Island Discs, so if you’re a big fan of those, take a peek behind the scenes with these episodes.
Thanks, as ever, to all of the guests for taking the time to speak to us about their careers – and if you love radio, either as a listener or as an aspiring producer, have a listen to Re: Producer! You can find us on Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music and YouTube.
