I’ve produced, developed and launched podcasts for a range of brands and exploring a variety of subjects. If you’re looking to create your own podcast and would like some advice or editorial guidance, get in touch!
Here are some podcasts I’ve produced or have appeared on:
Re: Producer
Ever wondered what a radio producer actually does? It’s a role I’ve been doing for decades but its varied nature continues to fascinate me, so that’s why my friend and Scala Radio colleague Mark Jeeves decided to create a podcast series in which we chat to experienced radio producers about their jobs, their advice for aspiring producers and their predictions about what radio might sound – or look – like in the future.
It’s really fun to work on and guests have included:
Adele Cross from BBC 1Xtra Breakfast
Rachel Barton, founder of Grape and former producer of Pete Tong and Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1
Sarah Crawley, producer of Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4
Karen Pearson, former producer of Gilles Peterson’s show on BBC Radio 1 and founder of Folded Wing
Pippa Taylor, Exec producer of The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X
Husain Husaini, Mornings Editor at Times Radio
Tim Johns, producer of the Jeremy Vine Show on BBC Radio 2
Sarah Taylor, producer of the iconic Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4
All fascinating people with varied stories and insights, so hopefully this is a useful listen whether or not you work in the industry!
Charlie Higson and Friends
I worked closely with Scala Radio’s Executive Producer to create podcasts of a 4-part radio series hosted by comedian, writer, The Fast Show co-creator and classical music fan Charlie Higson. Broadcast in 2021, Charlie is joined by a different pal in each episode, and they share their favourite pieces of music and chat about their ‘relationship’ with classical music.
Series 1 featured Paul Whitehouse, Bob Mortimer, Arabella Weir and Vic Reeves, and series 2, which broadcast in 2023, featured Harry Enfield, Simon Day, Armando Iannucci and Lucy Porter.
Beethoven: The Basics
As part of Scala Radio’s celebrations of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year in 2020, I produced a 4-part series called Beethoven: The Basics presented by Andy Bush, co-host of Hometime on Absolute Radio.
It’s a beginner’s guide to the life and music of ol’ Ludwig Van, with contributions from world-class musicians including violinist Nicola Benedetti, pianist Stephen Hough, cellist Matthew Barley, clarinettist Julian Bliss and conductors Sir Mark Elder, Jonathon Heyward, Carlo Rizzi and Karin Hendrickson.
The combination of the contributors’ insight and Andy’s unique commentary made this a really engaging listen. I love the fact Andy managed to include references to Mr Miyagi, Shaun Ryder and swimming pools’ No Heavy Petting signs whilst exploring things like Beethoven’s family life, notable premieres and his enduring legacy.
The series broadcast in April/May 2020, and we turned it into a 10-part series of bitesize podcasts, with music clips provided by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Signum Records.
Girls on Film
A fun, feminist film show, Girls On Film was launched to answer an urgent need to amplify female voices in film. Hosted by Anna Smith – film critic, broadcaster and Chair of the London Film Critics’ Circle – Girls on Film brings female film critics together with actors, filmmakers and activists to give a fresh perspective on gender in the movies.
In Spring 2020, I initiated a partnership between Scala Radio and Girls on Film and produced 2 podcasts celebrating women film composers. The first podcast featured Nainita Desai (For Sama, The Reason I Jump) and Anne Dudley (The Full Monty, Elle) discussing the scoring process, how they started out as film composers, their advice for aspiring composers and whether or not music has a gender.
The second podcast featured Isobel Waller-Bridge (Vita & Virginia, Fleabag), Anne Nikitin (American Animals, Calibre) and Rachel Portman (Emma, Belle, Chocolat). Isobel and Anne shared their thoughts about being labelled as ‘women composers’ and talked about the composition process for some of their recent scores. Rachel talked about working on the music for Life is Sweet and Ratcatcher, and offered advice for the next generation of film composers.
More recently, I’ve edited episodes on an ad-hoc basis and I’m delighted to be an occasional member of the Girls on Film team!
Phil Taggart’s Slacker Podcast
The series of interviews between the BBC Radio 1 presenter and a range of bands and artists is a favourite in the music podcast charts. The guests share one of their early demos and recall their experiences starting out in the music industry, offering advice to aspiring musicians.
I really enjoyed producing these podcasts – my favourites from Series 1 were the chats with Manic Street Preachers, Wolf Alice, Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol and Dan from Bastille.
Series 2 launched in March 2019 and guests included Fatboy Slim, Scroobius Pip, Christine & The Queens, Johnny Marr, Pete Doherty and Bring Me The Horizon.
Maths Appeal
Maths Appeal aims to make maths accessible to everyone! Presented by University Challenge contestant Bobby Seagull, who you may have seen on BBC 2 in Monkman and Seagull’s Genius Guide to Britain, and fellow maths teacher Susan Okereke, every episode focuses on a particular maths topic, featuring a puzzle set by Bobby.
We launched the podcast in 2018, and every episode in Series 1 featured an interview with a maths champion, including Johnny Ball, writer Alex Bellos, comedian Ken Cheng, founder of STEMettes Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon and writer Simon Singh.
Series 2 focused more on maths in the school curriculum, and in the most recent series we partnered up with National Numeracy and Experian to reflect maths in everyday life, featuring interviews with National Numeracy ambassadors like Great British Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins and the poet Harry Baker.
Ellie and Anna Have Issues
This is Heart’s first ever podcast and it features the best bits of Ellie Taylor and Anna Whitehouse‘s Sunday night show on the Heart network, with some additional not-suitable-for-broadcast bits thrown in.
Desert Island Dicks
This podcast finds you marooned on a desert island with the worst people and the worst things imaginable. It’s a great listen. I was a guest in 2017 and had a lovely time ranting about Hollyoaks, eggnog and Daniel Powter.
