My radio work has involved a lot of music scheduling at networks as varied as Classic FM and BBC 6 Music!
Here’s some more information about my background in music curation and programming:
Scala Radio
In my role as Programme Manager of the classical music station Scala Radio from 2019-2024, I was very involved in the station’s musical output, working closely with our brilliant Head of Music to ensure the variety and range of styles on offer matched our vision for the brand. I was also involved in creating new online radio stations focusing on a specific genre or mood as part of our subscription service, Scala Radio Premium.
I produced a range of specialist music shows and this involved selecting a lot of the music and building running orders incorporating the presenters’ choices, working closely with regular hosts Mark Kermode, Simon Mayo, Luci Holland and Alexis Ffrench, and with guest presenters including Anne Dudley, William Orbit, Goldie, Segun Akinola, Max Richter, Rachel Portman and Isobel Waller-Bridge.
I scheduled Scala Radio’s ‘movie music marathons’, All Movies Easter Monday and All Movies Monday. Every hour across the day was themed according to a film composer, genre, director, actor or franchise, and listeners voted for their favourite hour themes. We then took the 12 most popular themes and I curated an hour for each – so, for example, an hour of music by Ennio Morricone, an hour of music from films directed by Alfred Hitchcock or an hour of James Bond scores. For the August 2023 bank holiday All Movies Monday, I initiated a marketing partnership with Abbey Road which invited listeners to vote for their favourite film score recorded at the iconic studios.
In addition to the on-air music selections, I also curated monthly playlists on Apple Music for Mark Kermode and Luci Holland’s shows, which involved selecting the music for 3 themed playlists per show: Mark’s Eclectic Mix, Soundtrack Solace and New Releases along with the 3 playlists for The Console: Adventure Games, Sci-Fi Games and Recently Played Soundtracks.
Classic FM
In my role as Senior Producer, followed by Executive Producer, between 2012 and 2018, I selected the music for mainstream and specialist programmes using Selector and in the latter years GSelector.
Shows included Classic FM’s More Music Breakfast, film music show Saturday Night at the Movies, video games music show High Score, Charlotte Green’s Culture Club, The Sound of Music with Howard Goodall and Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Classic FM Chart and Classic FM’s Summer Book Club with Alexander Armstrong.
Deezer
In Spring 2018, I was invited to curate and produce a Deezer Originals classical music series, The Composers. Each playlist explored the music and career of a specific composer, and I selected the music, wrote the scripts and worked with the presenter Lucy Coward – and I enjoyed the experience all over again when The Composers was commissioned for a second series in Autumn 2018!
Since then, I was invited to curate and present a Deezer Originals series about film music. The Classic Movies playlists focus on directors, composers or genres, such as Tim Burton, John Williams and Superheroes.
Absolute Radio Network
As Music Producer between 2011 to 2012, I scheduled the music for digital networks Absolute 80s and Absolute Classic Rock, initially using Selector (DOS) and assisting in the database transfer to GSelector. I took part in weekly playlist meetings for Absolute Radio and was a member of the team building the playlists for digital services Absolute 60s and Absolute 70s.
BBC Radio 6 Music
I was a freelance Music Scheduler at BBC Radio 6 Music between 2009 and 2011, covering members of the music team by scheduling weekday daytime programmes using Powergold and selecting tracks for the Album of the Day.
