Film Music Book with Mark Kermode
I’ve co-written a book with Mark Kermode about film music – a total dream come true! Mark Kermode’s Surround Sound: The Stories of Movie Music is out now on Picador Books – please buy a copy, preferably from your local independent bookshop or bookshop.org.uk! The paperback edition will be released in September 2026.
The book explores how film scores are made, with chapters examining how directors communicate their musical vision to composers, along with composers’ working methods. There are also chapters dedicated to specific film genres, such as Horror and Action, and also musical genres, like Electronica and Pop. We’ve also tried to tell a potted history of film music from the Silent Era to present day, which was quite the challenge, plus there are deep dives into the stories behind key soundtracks such as Brazil, Under the Skin and Blade Runner.
We interviewed some of the most experienced, influential and innovative screen composers for the project, including Jonny Greenwood, Anne Dudley, Rachel Portman, Howard Shore, Michael Abels, Clint Mansell, Laura Karpman and Hildur Gudnadottir. Like I say, a dream come true.
We’re doing some events in May 2026 including at Stratford Literary Festival on Thursday 7th May – get your tickets here!
Adore Audio
I’ve set up a production company with my good friend and former Scala Radio colleague Mark Jeeves, pooling our experiences to create bespoke programmes and podcasts.
Adore Audio is in its early days and we’re keeping it a small-ish operation for the moment but in February 2026 we launched a new podcast, Cheeky Bricks – All About Property. Hosted by three estate agents with a wealth of experience in the industry, this is an insightful and entertaining listen focusing on the property market in the West Country.
BBC Radio Cornwall and BBC Sounds
I joined the team at BBC Radio Cornwall in Summer 2024 and work on a freelance basis as Senior Content Producer of the Breakfast Show. I’ve really enjoyed returning to live radio production, getting to grips with local news and discovering more about the issues that matter to the audience.
In Spring 2025 I produced a new podcast series at BBC Cornwall for BBC Sounds: the BBC LGBT Sport podcast with new host Nicola Adams. In each episode, the double Gold Olympian chats to a fellow sportsperson about their career, their LGBT journey and their hopes for LGBTQ+ people within the sporting world. Guests include Dame Kelly Holmes, triple Paralympian Gold rower Lauren Rowles and racing driver Charlie Martin. Every interview is so honest and insightful – do give them a listen!
