Scala Radio
I’m currently on maternity leave, having recently concluded my role as the Programme Manager at the classical music and entertainment radio station, Scala Radio. I started at Bauer Media in January 2019 and hit the ground running to prepare the station for launch in March.
Presenters over the years at Scala have included Simon Mayo, Charles Nove, Alexis Ffrench, Angellica Bell and Penny Smith, and guest presenters of short-term series have included DJ Spoony, David Arnold, William Orbit, Gemma Cairney, Jo Brand, Eddi Reader, Tony Hadley, Goldie and Charlie Higson.
My role involved overseeing the day-to-day operations of the station and producing a selection of shows including Mark Kermode‘s film scores show, video game music show The Console with Luci Holland and Simon Mayo‘s weekend programme. I also booked the guests for the Scala Radio Book Club interview every Thursday at 10.30am.
In addition to the above weekly shows, I regularly produced short-term series such as:
- ‘Scala Radio at the Opera’, hosted by Penny Smith and sponsored by the Royal Opera House
- 4 programmes hosted by Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley including ‘Scala Radio at the Oscars’ on the day of the 92nd Academy Awards
- Two series exploring TV scores hosted by Doctor Who composer Segun Akinola called ‘TV On The Radio’
- A one-off special ‘Scala Radio Celebrates John Williams’ presented by Maxine Kwok from the London Symphony Orchestra
- ‘Beethoven: The Basics’ with Andy Bush, a 4-part series exploring the life and music of the great composer in his 250th anniversary year, which is available in bitesize podcast form
- ‘The Empire Playlist’, a movie music special in partnership with Empire magazine
- An interview series with acclaimed film composers sharing their experiences of recording scores at Abbey Road, as part of our ‘All Movies Monday’ partnership with the iconic studios.
In March 2021, I produced 2 of the 4 episodes in the series ‘She Scores on Scala Radio‘: we invited 4 women composers for film, TV and video games to guest host and curate a show, as part of Scala’s International Women’s Day celebrations. Pinar Toprak, Jessica Curry, Isobel Waller-Bridge and Nainita Desai were the guest presenters, and I was one of the producers of the second series of ‘She Scores’, broadcast in March 2022, where I had the pleasure of working with Rachel Portman and Laura Karpman.
